A little about Peter

The great thing about running my own company is that I get complete freedom to specialise as I want to. Information Security is a fascinating and challenging field I feel perfectly suited for.

Background

I’ve lived in Britain all my life, but I love to travel – business trips have taken me all over the United States and Europe, and my family has enjoyed some great holidays in places like Cyprus and Mexico. Having said that, my children have chased me round many windswept beaches here in Old Blighty, with wellies full of seawater and more than a few ice creams lost to the English sands!

My wife and partner in all things, Wendy, and I met during our university course. I graduated with a first class honours degree and had by then become known as ‘The Minstrel’, because I play several instruments such as the keyboard and flute, and rather fancied myself as a poet. I then joined IBM’s graduate programme, and from there was headhunted to help build the technical infrastructure supporting solutions for a couple of investment banks. It was at this time that I started to advise on Information Security matters, and I was hooked. Wendy and I founded Rhye Internet Solutions Limited in 1997 and, in the years since then, I have been very fortunate in terms of being able to seek out projects that have continually tested and honed my abilities and as well as the experience I have picked up through my daily work, I have also carried out a great deal of research into Information Security.

Information Assurance qualifications

As you can see in the website footer, I have a lot of letters after my name (actually, thanks to my parents, I have a lot of letters in the middle of my name too!). While long-winded, I include them all because different qualifications are of interest to different potential clients. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • First Class BSc (Hons) Computer Science, University of Portsmouth, 1995
  • CESG Listed Adviser Scheme (CLAS) Consultant, since 2001
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng)
  • Chartered IT Professional (CITP)
  • Fellow of The British Computer Society (FBCS)
  • Full member of the Institute of Information Security Professionals (M.Inst.ISP)

Miscellaneous

I also run mailing lists and other online services for CLAS consultants and write in my Information Security Articles blog. I have also been involved in the development of the ISO/IEC 27000 series of standards.

…And for those interested in more technical matters, before OpenSSH incorporated chroot capability into the main product, I provided “How To” guidance (and source code) so that systems administrators could chroot their SFTP users. My solution was used by a variety of different organisations, including the US military!
